Aztecs Demolish Texas A&M Commerce 45-14 in Season Opener Behind O’Neil and Cooper

San Diego State opened their season in dominant fashion,
dismantling Texas A&M Commerce 45-14 at Snapdragon Stadium
behind standout performances from quarterback Danny O’Neil and
running back Marquez Cooper.

O’Neil, making his first career start, completed 22 of 33 passes
for 213 yards and two touchdowns — a composed debut that belied
his inexperience. Cooper was even more impressive on the ground,
carrying the ball 27 times for 223 yards and two touchdowns,
setting the tone early and controlling the tempo throughout.

Head Coach Sean Lewis praised the chemistry between O’Neil and
his receivers, crediting their synchronization as a key factor
in settling the young quarterback early. “No player needs to
venture beyond their training,” Lewis said, emphasizing elite
execution of fundamentals over complexity.

Defensively the Aztecs were equally dominant. Lewis highlighted
the improved communication and relentless effort displayed by
his unit in the second half, which disrupted Commerce’s rhythm
and broke the timing of their passing game entirely.

With O’Neil and Cooper emerging as a dangerous duo and a defense
that communicates and pursues with intensity, the Aztecs look
poised for a strong season under Coach Lewis.
