SAN DIEGO — August 14, 2026 — San Diego Wave FC returned to Snapdragon Stadium on Friday night looking to secure another three points, but expansion side Denver Summit FC responded in the second half to earn a 1-1 draw in front of 13,463 fans.
The result moved San Diego to a 10-7-3 record with 33 points, while Denver improved to 6-7-6 with 24 points.
Before kickoff, the Wave recognized defender Kristen McNabb, who recently became the first player in club history to reach 100 appearances. The milestone added a special moment to the night before the focus shifted to the action on the field.
Denver applied pressure early, but San Diego gradually settled into the match and began finding opportunities in the attacking third. Ludmila came close to putting the Wave ahead in the 27th minute after getting around Denver goalkeeper Abby Smith, but her attempt went just wide.
Eight minutes later, 18-year-old Melanie Barcenas delivered the breakthrough.
After receiving a pass from Gia Corley on the right side, Barcenas cut inside, worked her way through multiple Denver defenders and fired a low shot from outside the penalty area into the bottom corner. The 35th-minute strike gave San Diego a 1-0 advantage and marked Barcenas’ fourth goal of the season — the most by a teenager in the NWSL this season. Corley picked up her fourth assist of the year, a career high and the most on the Wave roster in 2026.
San Diego carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime, but Denver came out aggressively after the break.
In the 58th minute, Denver found its answer. Janine Sonis delivered a ball into the area and Yazmeen Ryan connected with a header to beat San Diego goalkeeper Cata Coll, bringing the match level at 1-1. It was Ryan’s fifth goal of the season.
Denver’s second-half adjustments changed the flow of the match. The Summit outshot San Diego 7-2 after halftime and prevented the Wave from finding the go-ahead goal.
Despite Denver finishing with an 11-7 advantage in total shots, San Diego put five attempts on target compared with Denver’s two and controlled 55 percent of possession. Wave goalkeeper Cata Coll finished with one save, while Smith recorded four for Denver.
The night also featured two Wave debuts. Laila Harbert entered in the 72nd minute after joining San Diego from Arsenal in July, while Brooklyn Courtnall made her first Wave appearance as an 83rd-minute substitute after arriving on loan from Bay FC.
San Diego walked away with a point but was unable to turn its strong first half into a home victory. The 1-1 result showed flashes of the Wave’s attacking quality while also highlighting the importance of maintaining pressure through the full 90 minutes as the club pushes through the final portion of the NWSL season.
Final: San Diego Wave FC 1, Denver Summit FC 1
Goals: Melanie Barcenas (SD) 35′ | Yazmeen Ryan (DEN) 58′
