San Diego Rodeo Returns to Petco Park for First Time Since the 1980s

By Cali Camera News March 26, 2026

The buzz around Petco Park was palpable this past weekend as
the San Diego Rodeo made its grand return to the city center
for the first time since the 1980s. Cowboys hats, denim and
pickup trucks lined the surrounding streets as the stadium was
transformed into a genuine rodeo arena right in the heart of
downtown.

The events were fast-paced and intensely competitive. Breakaway
roping stole early headlines with some competitors capturing
their calves in under two seconds. Bull and bronc riding
delivered heart-stopping moments as riders pushed for the
prestigious eight-second mark. Barrel racing was a crowd
favorite — the synergy between horse and rider was both
beautiful and precise, navigating the cloverleaf pattern with
speed and grace.

One of the night’s standout moments came from 68-year-old Sue
Smith, who wowed the crowd in barrel racing and proved that
skill and passion can defy age.

Event organizers added fun twists throughout the night including
a “line dance cam” replacing the traditional kiss cam on the
jumbotron — a hit with the crowd. The rodeo clown, armed with
a t-shirt gun and full face paint, kept the younger fans
entertained between events.

The San Diego Rodeo at Petco Park was an unequivocal success —
a perfect blend of competition, heritage and entertainment.
Here’s hoping it becomes a downtown fixture for years to come.

Cali Camera Media was on the ground for both nights. Full
