SAN DIEGO — August 21, 2026 — San Diego Wave FC delivered an explosive offensive performance Friday night, defeating Utah Royals FC 4-2 in front of 11,210 fans at Snapdragon Stadium.
Trinity Byars led the way with a standout performance, scoring twice and assisting on two additional goals as the Wave secured three points in an important NWSL matchup. Melanie Barcenas and Ludmila also found the back of the net for San Diego, while Mina Tanaka scored both goals for Utah.
The victory improved San Diego to 11-7-3 with 36 points, putting the Wave level with Utah in the standings.
San Diego wasted little time putting pressure on the visitors.
Just four minutes into the match, Barcenas delivered a curling ball behind Utah’s defensive line that found Byars making a run toward goal. Byars controlled the pass, raced into the box and calmly finished past goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn to give San Diego an early 1-0 advantage.
The goal immediately brought energy to Snapdragon Stadium, but Utah remained composed and worked its way back into the match.
In the 29th minute, Cece Delzer found Tanaka near the edge of the penalty area. Tanaka connected with a first-time effort and curled the ball into the upper corner, beating San Diego goalkeeper Sandra Paños and tying the match at 1-1.
San Diego responded before halftime.

Byars once again created problems for Utah’s defense, using her speed to get behind the back line before rounding McGlynn. Instead of forcing a difficult shot, Byars pulled the ball back across the box to Barcenas.
The 18-year-old forward finished the opportunity in the 40th minute to put San Diego back in front 2-1. It was Barcenas’ fifth goal of the season and her second consecutive home match with a goal at Snapdragon Stadium.
The Wave carried the one-goal advantage into halftime, but Utah quickly erased it after the break.
Only two minutes into the second half, Cloé Lacasse played a ball across the six-yard box to Tanaka, who finished into the top corner for her second goal of the night. The brace brought Utah level again at 2-2 and set up what appeared to be a wide-open final 40 minutes.
San Diego, however, had another response.
Head coach Jonas Eidevall brought Jordan Fusco into the match in the 62nd minute, and the substitution immediately paid off.
One minute later, Fusco played Byars through on goal. Byars used her speed to separate herself from Utah’s defense before finishing the opportunity for her second goal of the night.
The 63rd-minute strike gave the Wave a 3-2 lead and completed Byars’ second brace of the season. It also gave Fusco her first career NWSL assist.
Byars wasn’t finished.
In the 70th minute, she attacked down the right side, beat her defender and sent the ball across the penalty area. Ludmila met the pass with a first-time finish, giving San Diego some breathing room with a 4-2 advantage.
The goal was Ludmila’s second of the season and ended a lengthy scoring drought for the Brazilian forward.
For Byars, the assist completed a remarkable night. She finished with two goals and two assists, directly contributing to all four San Diego goals. Her two scores increased her season total to eight, the most by a Wave player in 2026.
Utah continued pushing forward in search of another comeback and appeared to pull one back late in the match, but an 82nd-minute goal was overturned for offside following a VAR review.
San Diego closed out the remaining minutes to secure the 4-2 victory.
The final statistics showed how competitive the matchup was despite the two-goal margin. Utah held 54 percent of possession and finished with 12 shots compared with San Diego’s 13. The difference came in the quality of the opportunities, as the Wave put five shots on target while Utah managed two.
The match also marked Laila Harbert’s first start for San Diego after joining the Wave from Arsenal.
More importantly, San Diego’s attack showed its ability to respond under pressure. Utah erased the Wave’s lead twice, but San Diego never allowed the momentum to completely shift.
Each time the Royals answered, the Wave found another way through.
On a night featuring six goals, it was Byars who made the biggest impact. Her pace stretched Utah’s defense throughout the match, while her willingness to create opportunities for teammates proved just as important as her finishing.
With Barcenas continuing to emerge as an attacking threat and Ludmila returning to the scoresheet, San Diego walked away from Snapdragon Stadium with three points and one of its strongest offensive performances of the season.
