The San Diego State women’s basketball team dominated their
season opener, defeating Cal State San Marcos 76-48 at Viejas
Arena on Monday evening. This impressive victory sets the tone
for an exciting season ahead.
The Aztecs never trailed, forcing 28 turnovers that led to 36
points. Four players scored in double digits: Erin Houpt (13),
Adryana Quezada (12), Kim Villalobos (11), and Khylee Pepe (10).
Quezada added a double-double with 12 rebounds, while Cali Clark
grabbed 10 boards.
SDSU outscored San Marcos 40-26 in the paint and held a 36-7
advantage in points off turnovers. The Aztecs made 28 free throws
— the second-most in the Mountain West era (1999-present). Eight
players scored in the game, and Naomi Panganiban became the first
Aztec true freshman to start a season opener since 2018.
“It was exciting to get on the floor and play against someone
else,” said Head Coach Stacie Terry-Hutson. “If we can play with
a sense of urgency and share the ball at a high level, I think
this is going to be a great year for us.”
“With the new freshmen and transfers, we’re playing at a much
faster pace. We’re going to score more points because we’re going
to get more possessions.” – Head Coach Stacie Terry-Hutson
