San Diego State’s upset bid came up just short on Homecoming Night at Snapdragon Stadium, as Washington State rallied from a 12-point deficit to secure a 29-26 victory.
The Aztecs (3-4) dominated statistically, outgaining the Cougars (7-1) 414-371 in total yards. However, WSU’s fourth-quarter surge, led by quarterback John Mateer, proved decisive.
Key Performances: Marquez Cooper rushed for 78 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ja’Shaun Poke caught 10 passes for 80 yards — both season highs. Danny O’Neil went 22/34 for 195 yards with 1 interception. Tano Letuli posted a career-high 10 tackles.
Key turning points included Jelani Whitmore recovering a muffed punt to set up a touchdown, Jordan Napier’s option pass to Nate Bennett putting the Aztecs ahead 19-14, and WSU’s Mateer sparking the comeback with a 34-yard TD pass. Taariq Al-Uqdah’s interception return also shifted momentum late.
